- Description:
The Ampex 342 / 642 / 376 LP (long play) tapes are newer low noise / high output formulations produced by Ampex and from the late 1970s through the 1980s and then by Quantegy until they closed down in 2007. All of these tapes are classified as type 3 – low noise / high output. These formulations are so close to each other that they can be considered identical. This tape was not back coated and did not have sticky shed. The performance is similar to Maxell’s UD. It was also sold by Radio Shack in the 1990s through the 2000s as their sole (and last) reel to reel tape. Notes:
- This is a formula that has withstood the test of time. It is reliable and can be used today.
- The 342 Series came out as the “Plus Series”, and we identified two other formulations that are similar. One was identical to the later 642.
- This tape was also sold as the series “376” or “ELN” for “Extra Low Noise”.
- The quality of this tape is high, with excellent stability and low oxide shedding.
- They were shipped in a variety of packaging and reel designs, and the Radio Shack private label versions should be included.
- Available Refurbished: Yes, you can buy refurbished reels of 342, 642, and 376 in our store and they are highly recommended.
