- Description:
When Audio Devices was purchased by Capitol records, the released updated formulations of Audiotape’s “Formula 15” Low Noise tape under the new brand and slightly changed the tape codes by adding “2” to them. These tapes trace their lineage from the famous Audiotapes used for professional recordings in the 1950s and 1960s and had a great reputation. All of these tapes were extremely well made and hold up well today. Notes:
- This is a formula that has withstood the test of time, with excellent performance today
- Performance is similar to (if not better than) the Scotch 203 series.
- We highly recommend the 1279 (Mylar SP) and 1869 (Mylar LP) as excellent quality Low Noise (type 2) tapes, in league with the Scotch 202/203 and Ampex 434/434. These are excellent choices for your older machine.
- These tapes can be identified by their shiny gray color that is similar in appearance to their Scotch and Ampex countertypes.
- Audiotape (and later Capitol) were famous for their “Easy C-Slot Reel” to make tape threading easier.
- These tapes have very low oxide shedding like the Scotch 203 and can be considered to be “modern” tapes. They are highly recommended for your older machine, and even later machines biased for the Scotch 203, or “low noise” setting.
