Audio Magnetics LP

Audio Magnetics was a popular American brand of low cost reel to reel tapes. They produced many derivatives of standard oxide tapes, and specialized in private label tapes for many customers. They produced such tape well into the 1970s. In the 1950s and 1960s they did not identify their formulations by a type code, so we are unable to definitively identify formulation changes.

The quality of their tapes is mixed, with many formulations suffering from higher oxide shedding and in general lower performance than top tier brands. There were many formulations that were usable, however, and ongoing forensic analysis at Reel to Reel warehouse will help to uncover some of the mysteries here with these tape formulations. Type 1 formulations were from Audio Magnetics were brown to dark brown in color, and we offer refurbished tape in our store that have proven to hold up well over time. We have found that the bias requirement for their tapes can fall between what is required for Scotch 111 and Scotch 203.
