Maxell sold a lot of LN (Low Noise – Type 2) tapes in the 1970s, but their market reputation was made with their UD Series (Ultra Dynamic) tapes, a series of Low Noise / High Output tapes (type 3).  The LN Series came in two basic varieties – a true low noise version and a newer version one that was really a Low Noise / High Output tape (you can tell by the “Improved” marking on the box) and was probably a rebadged version of an older UD formulation. In any case, the LN is an acceptable tape, but only the improved ones are the tapes to look out for, as they are similar to the UD in quality.

• These are formulas that have withstood the test of time, without sticky shed or excess oxide shedding. Maxell made special note of their unique binder designed to provide a long operating life. Today the Maxell tapes have developed a reputation of arguably being the best consumer reel to reel tapes ever made. As a result, the LN tapes still hold their quality and can be used today
• The older LN tapes are not worth what is normally asked for them on ebay – they are simply not the same quality of tape that cemented their reputation. Don’t pay extra for them.
• Maxell put a lot of research and development in their tape line, and they developed SP, LP, DP and TP thicknesses for the LN Series. For DP versions, Maxell followed the practice of BASF and AGFA and developed the tape with a 0.75 micron base and a thinner oxide coating than the SP or LP tapes, and the developed a third formula for the TP tape.
