- Description:
The Ampex 334 and 344 are Type 2 “Low Noise” tapes released in the mid 1960s to compete with the Scotch 202/203 and Audiotape 1867 Series. The 334 is the Mylar Single Play and the 344 is the Mylar Long Play. These were among the first Low noise tapes made, and they are characterized by their gray colored oxide. These tapes perform as well as the Scotch 203 and are recommended. They were also made with Ampex’s Ferrosheen process, and are known for their longevity, low oxide shedding, and excellent frequency response for the time. To our knowledge, no double play version of this formulation was ever made. Notes:
- These formulas have withstood the test of time. It is amazing to consider that you can make a high quality recordings on a 60 year old tape, but this is indeed possible.
- The general quality of these tapes increased over their production run as general improvements were made, particularly with oxide shedding and smoothness.
- Ampex tapes included the formula code on the tape hold down tab, supplied when new. Many users kept the tab or stuck it to the box, so this might help you identifying a formulation.
- Later versions of the low noise tape were devoped into the 332/342 “Plus” Series and the ELN.
- Available Refurbished: Yes, you can buy refurbished reels of 334 and 344 in our store.
