Sony’s PRA was Sony’s last budget low noise tape, classified as a (type 2) for the consumer market, and mostly available in Japan. The tape appears similar in performance to Maxell’s last generation LN tape. They were available through the 1980s until Sony exited the reel to reel tape business. Notes:
- There were two formulations identified – the early PRAs had a formulation similar to the PR-150. These are not recommended due to the possibility of squealing.
- Later generations appear similar to the ULH Series without back coating with a shiny dark gray oxide coating.
- The tape was only available in the LP thickness.
- This tape, similar to Sony’s non-backcoated ULH, hold up well as probably the one of the best reel to reel tapes Sony ever made.
