- Description:
Soundcraft tapes were very popular in the 1960s, and their performance was similar to the Scotch 111 and 150, and the other standard tapes available at the time. They were available in SP (plus) , LP (plus 50) and DP (Plus 100) thicknesses. This was a very popular tape back in the day, so they are often found in garage or estate sales. The “Plus” Series is actually closer to Ampex’s 641, with a well polished oxidecoating and low shedding. Reeves was purchased by Columbia Records in 1969/1970 and later Columbia released their own tapes based on the Soundcraft formulas. Notes:
- This is a formula that has withstood the test of time. It is amazing to consider that you can make a high quality recordings on a 60 year old tape, but this is indeed possible.
- This tape was available in both Acetate and Polyester versions. The Acetate versions seem to have more trouble than other acetate tape brands playing back properly.
- Similar to the Scotch and Ampex tapes of the time, the DP (Double Play) version has the same oxide coating as the SP and LP
- Tapes of this vintage have a tendency to shed oxide more than modern tapes. This is not a sign that this tape is degrading, it should be considered normal. The “Plus” series shedding is on par with Irish/Ampex tapes and their Ferrosheen process, which is better than the standard Scotch 111/150 or Audiotapes at the time
- The general quality of these tapes was high for the time, and they had an excellent reputation, which is why we highly recommend them.
- This tape formulation was often used for commercial tape duplication for tapes in the 1960s.
- Available Refurbished: Yes, you can buy refurbished reels of Soundcraft in our store made with Polyester backing.
