Denon was a Japanese tape manufacturer made famous for their superb audio equipment their excellent cassette tapes. Denon also briefly manufactured some high end reel to reel tape decks, primarily for the Japanese audio market. They didn’t release many reel to reel tapes – the ones we know of are the DX 550/1100B and 1101B mastering tapes, available in LP form with back coating. The oxide was highly polished brown was equivalent in quality to back coated type 4 (+3 ) tapes like Maxell’s UDXL or Sony’s ULH. According to our research, they only produced tapes in the LP thickness.
These tapes are relatively rare on the ground and difficult to find in volume, so we sell them refurbished in small quantities. Just like their cassettes, their quality is very high, and we have not seen any sticky shed or squealing in any of our testing. They exited the market shortly after the release of their DX1101B tape in the early 1980s. As a reel to reel tape fan back in the day, I never even know they produced reel to reel tapes until very recently.
