What NAB Cine Hubs Are
NAB refers to the large 4-inch center opening found on 10.5-inch metal reels and many professional-grade plastic reels. This standardized opening was designed for secure, repeatable mounting on studio and broadcast transports. Rather than slipping over a simple small spindle, an NAB reel mates with a hub that supports the reel across its broad center opening.
Cine reels use a smaller center opening, commonly associated with 7-inch and smaller reels. Many consumer and semi-professional decks use a cine-type spindle arrangement, while some professional transports use dedicated NAB adapters or integral NAB hubs. An NAB cine hub is generally an adapter or hub assembly that allows equipment built around one reel-mounting arrangement to handle the other.
The terminology deserves care. Sellers and manufacturers have not always used the words cine hub, NAB adapter, and reel adapter in precisely the same way. Some products are adapters that fit onto a cine spindle and present an NAB-compatible mounting surface. Others are machine-specific hub assemblies, and some are intended only for certain professional decks. The name alone is never enough to establish compatibility.
Why Correct Hub Fit Matters
A large reel may physically slide onto a spindle even when it is not correctly supported. That does not mean it is safe to run. A poorly fitted reel can sit off-center, wobble during fast wind, rub a reel table, or fail to remain locked under changing tape tension.
At 7 1/2 or 15 ips, modest runout can become obvious as uneven winding and edge damage. At high-speed rewind, the consequences can be more serious: a reel may chatter, shift, or produce a loose tape pack that needs to be respoolled before use. Your deck must be designed not only to accept the reel center but also to carry that mass, maintain stable torque, and stop it safely. A 10.5-inch reel might hold 1/4-inch tape for a two-track or four-track deck, but large reels are also used with wider formats. Never assume that a large reel and an NAB opening indicate a standard 1/4-inch audio setup.
Identifying Your Machine’s Reel System
Start with the deck, not the reel you hope to use. Check the owner’s manual, service documentation, and the physical spindle or hub arrangement. Look for an original model designation rather than relying on a similar-looking machine, since manufacturers often offered different reel-table configurations within the same product family.
A practical inspection should answer three questions: what center opening does the deck accept, how does it lock the reel in place, and what reel diameter and weight does the manufacturer approve? The first question identifies the basic hub type. The second prevents a dangerous assumption that every adapter uses the same twist-lock or retaining method. The third addresses the transport’s actual mechanical limits.

Examine the condition closely if buying vintage hardware. Metal parts should be free of bends and deep corrosion. The contact surfaces that support the reel should be smooth and clean. Springs, latches, and twist locks should operate consistently. On plastic components, look carefully for stress cracks around the center bore and locking points. Store removable hubs together as a labeled pair. This prevents accidental mixing with similar adapters and makes it easier to retain all required locking pieces. When storing large reels, avoid stacking them directly on unprotected hubs or leaving adapters under constant load for long periods.
Most hub problems are preventable. Confirm the reel standard, respect the transport’s rated limits, and test an unfamiliar setup before threading a rare recording.
